All those years spent working to a design brief meant that to be really personal about my painting and drawing I was going to have to be selfish - and it was good to find a positive use for this word. It was a relief to move away from words and the mis-interpretations they can cause, but I love how very different reactions can be to paintings and drawings. I paint faces from life, mostly they are painted in one day. I start with a charcoal study so we can get used to looking at each other. Then I work in oil on linen. I try to make the session an informal experience so that the painting might feel more relaxed, looser and spontaneous.
The Beach Hut Gallery in Grange-over-Sands have been kind enough to show my first Cumbrian landscapes. I have approached these in the same way I paint faces - on location in one session.
