ABOUT THE PIECE SHOWN at SOUTH KENSINGTON
The Flaque celebrates the birth of our second daughter and her life in our flat in the Isle of Dogs, London. My wife had opted to have a home birth, almost extinct back in our home country, and thanks to the two extremely dedicated midwives, Lyrico was born in the living room of our flat. As an artist, I felt obliged to do something about this very site-specific and otherwise unattainable experience. Then the idea of creating a private plaque occurred to me. The piece thus created is both an allusion and an antithesis to London's Blue Plaque Scheme, which commemorates outstanding Londoners usually dead for 20 years. A blue plaque is a skillfully crafted ceramic piece, while this Flaque is a square limestone tile with a carved inscription. I employed this traditional technique of letter carving in order to historicise such a banal and domestic event as my daughter's birth and her on-going life. A red circle, done with enamel paint, against the whitish background visually suggests her ethnicity as Japanese. Also the seemingly miss-spelt ISLE OF GODS, instead of ISLE OF DOGS, refers to Japan, where monotheism can be something foreign.
Tetsuya Endo will participate in the Criteria of Beauty exhibition at T1 + 2 Gallery near Whitechapel from 10th to 20th of December. A private view will take place from 6 to 9 on the opening night and there will also be a tea ceremony by the guest artist Kaoru Motomiya.
