Alexandra Hill is a graduate from Central Saint Martins who specializes in Surface Design and Architectural Ceramics. Her tiles, panels and murals are hand-painted and printed finished with mother of pearl and gold lustres. Using symbols and imagery in her pattern designs, her artwork provides the viewer with a deeper meaning into surface design. Being born in England and raised in Mexico, her designs reflect the rich Arts and crafts legacy of each country, resulting on a unique cultural syncretism.
Her latest collection is inspired by the work of William Morris. Using Mexican and English Arts and Crafts as inspiration, she decided to centre a series of tile panels on the theme of "Death and Re-birth". This theme is not only a cultural voice to both of her nationalities, but it also serves as a medium to give homage to the death and re-birth of Architect William Lethaby's Central Saint Martins building. The school will move to its new site in Kings Cross in 2011. W.R. Lethaby was not only the founding father of CSM but also an Arts & Crafts enthusiast and a friend of William Morris, which complements the theme of the collection.
