More information on my latest series: 'Dreams on Fire'.
In this series I use portraiture to explore the subtle emotional interaction in relationships. A response to Jacques Lacan's statement: ' There is no such thing as a sexual relationship'. Lacan is stating that men and women do not 'interact' with each other. The 11 portraits, painted in oil on primed aluminium, are made to investigate whether the facial expressions that reveal the kaleidoscope of emotions that exist between people support Lacan's thinking. The portraits are shown in pairs and placed at different distances. Each separation has its own particular spacing to reflect and enhance the emotions being portrayed.
These paintings concentrate on the narrative melodrama between characters of films. The images I work with are photographs I take from frozen moments in film. Each still is chosen to best express a particular emotion. The actors are unknown so as not to interrupt the intention of the work. These paintings are closely cropped and carefully selected in order that they interact with each other in a 'conversational' manner when installed in a space. This will encourage a dynamic hang which utilises the architecture of the space and the negative zones between the paintings.
