James Baker is a London based illustrator and designer working in two dimensional techniques, moving image and sculpture. He studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Chelsea College of Art and Design and has had work shown at a number of international film festivals and events. These include the London International Animation Festival, Melbourne International Animation Festival, Brancage Film Festival, Filmaka, the New York International Children's Film Festival, and the London Short Film Festival. The latter awarded him the prize for best film in the 'Music and Videos' category. This award included having the film added to the BFI National Archive.
Progressive character design festival and conference Pictoplasma has also regularly shown his work at their curated events in Berlin, as well as in Holland, Belgium and Argetina.
His work encompasses a broad array of approaches and techniques. Organic draughtsmanship, photomontage and digital precision all feature, sometimes within a single piece. His moving image work is also diverse, utilising frame by frame processes as well as real time techniques like puppetry. Within all his work early and pre-cinematic moving image, optical illusion, and mathematical and esoteric imagery have been some of the main influences.
