Statement
My work stems from a documentary approach that is intuitive and visceral. It is led by my fascination with human behavior, cultural and psychological identity and the contrasts that divide the world through opposing beliefs and traditions. Central to my practice is the assimilation of individual ideas that merge and reconfigure to enable the expression of a unique narrative. Through experimentation with technical constraints and specific approaches I seek what lies below the surface, unnoticed and often ignored. I'm interested in developing a visual language that sits in limbo, betwixt and between, blurring the boundaries of genres, modes, disciplines and realms. I regard my work as a means of investigation and self-exploration.
'Into Reverie'
In this photographic series I explore the
boundaries of the photographic language through self-imposed technical
restriction. With the intention of producing more expressive, abstract
imagery, I have limited myself to photographing only with long shutter
speeds.
Subjects are often captured at night or when daylight is fading from the sky
and the ambient and artificial light have equal weight. In environments where
people are engaged in ritual: Festivals, processions, funfairs, circus, dance
performances, parties and nightclubs. Effects are produced in-camera (no
post-production digital manipulation is used) with pans, zooms and often
shooting without looking through the viewfinder. The images are spontaneous responses
to my transitory states of mind - hopes, fears and passions, carried by my
desire to produce work that is challenging and aesthetically unique. Chasing
moments in transition that morph through their extension of time into something
of their own, travelling between the reality I witness and the non-reality I
wish to create. They take on their own
persona, hanging in limbo, a space of the obscure.
